Binge drinking 'doubles heart risk' - reports BBC

The BBC reported today that "Binge drinkers have a risk of heart disease twice that of people who consume the same amount of alcohol but more steadily".

"The study compared 10,000 male drinkers from "booze-bingeing" Belfast and "moderate" France over 10 years. It concluded that downing lots of alcohol in one or two sessions is worse than drinking more regularly in a week".

Watch Panorama BBC1 Tonight - Tax on Fat!

BBC1 Panorama Tonight 20.30 - Tax on Fat - Watch it!!
"Britain is the fattest nation in Europe, and it's slowly killing us. So is it time to tax the fat? Would putting up the price of junk food, high in sugar and fat, cut obesity rates in the same way as a tax on cigarettes has helped reduce smoking? Panorama travels to Denmark - the first country in the world to implement such a tax - to see how it's working there, and to the US, where a proposal to tax sugary drinks like Coca Cola has met with fierce opposition.
Could a fat tax here help the NHS to afford the ever-rising cost of treating obesity-related illnesses like diabetes and heart disease? Reporter Shelley Jofre puts the idea to the Health Secretary, and to families who would have to pay more for junk food."

BBC - "Fewer people quit smoking in recession, figures suggest"

The BBC reported today that "fewer people have tried to give up smoking in England during the recession than did so before"

"Although it can be an expensive habit, experts say some people rely on smoking during hard times.
In 2007 - before the recession - about 32% of smokers said they had tried to quit within the past three months."

"This had fallen to 23% by 2008 and 22% by 2009. Latest figures up to 2010 show only 17% have attempted to quit, says Cancer Research UK."
