Smoking snippet

Remember this Blog!!

Smoking “rots” brain says King’s College study.

According to research, smoking damages memory, learning and reasoning. The study showed that high blood pressure and being overweight also seemed to affect the brain, but to a lesser degree. This was the conclusion after a study of 8,800 people over 50 indicated that lifestyles could affect the mind as well as the baby.

Researchers at Kings investigating links between the likelihood of a heart attack or stroke and the state of the brain, collected data about the lifestyle and health of a group of over 50’s and made participants perform various brain tests. These tests were performed again after four and eight years.
The results showed that there was a ‘consistent association’ between smoking and lower scores in the tests, those with the highest risk of heart attack or stroke showed the greatest cognitive decline.

People need to be aware of the importance of looking after their cardiovascular health from midlife and their need to make some lifestyle changes because of the risk of cognitive decline.
Dr. Alex Dregan said, “Cognitive decline becomes more common with aging and for an increasing number of people interferes with daily functioning and well-being.”

However, researchers are not sure if the early drop in brain function could lead to conditions such as dementia.

Lifestyle that is bad for our heart can be bad for our brain too.
One in three people over 65 will develop Dementia.

What’s bad for our heart and head?

1.       Smoking
2.       High blood pressure
3.       High cholesterol levels
4.       High body mass index
Reduce your risk by…

1.       Eat a balanced diet
2.       Maintain a healthy weight
3.       Exercise regularly
4.       Get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly
5.       Do not smoke
Soooo, if you smoke (and you remember this blog) go to:-

Anti-depression... talk vs drugs "Up to two thirds of people with depression do not respond to anti-depressants."A recent article in BBC health news taken from a study in the Lancet cites.
The article later went on to say that CBT was found to benefit nearly half of patients who were tested.
The patients who did benefit spent an hour a week learning skills to help change the way they think.
With hypnotherapy we can subconsciously learn to change the way we think for the better, and even investing time into ourselves with talking therapy once a week can make all the difference. As Paul Farmer (executive at the mental health charity, Mind) said, "There was no "one size fits all" treatment for people with mental health problems."
It is as important as choosing the therapy that fits you, choosing the best qualified therapist for the job, so always make sure your therapist (whatever the field) is part of a larger governing body. For example, we at Assured Effects Hypnotherapy belong to the National Council of Hypnotherapy where we adhere to their code of ethics and conduct.

The effects of drinking during pregnancy revealed.

    By Assured Effects Hypnotherapy

Moderate drinking in pregnancy 'harms I.Q.'.

So says a study carried out by researchers from Bristol and Oxford Universities who looked at I.Q. scores of 4000 children while recording the alcohol intake of their mothers.

The effect on I.Q. was small when there was a moderate intake, one to six units a week, during pregnancy. Other factors such as mother's age and education were ruled out by looking at changes in genes which are not connected to social effects.

It was found that four genetic variants in alcohol-metabolising genes in children and their mothers related to lower I.Q. at age eight. This I.Q. on average, was almost two points lower for each genetic modification.
However research shows that these differences are small and lower I.Q. has also been shown to be related to socially disadvantaged, having poorer health and even dying younger. The effect was not shown among women who abstained during pregnancy.

Although the advice is for women to decide for themselves whether to drink or not during pregnancy the advice has long been to avoid alcohol. Women who have the occasional alcoholic drink during pregnancy should not be too alarmed but the safest course is obviously abstinence.

The effects of alcohol in pregnancy:-

    1. The level of alcohol in the baby's blood rises as high as the mothers.
    2. The baby's liver cannot break down the alcohol as fast as an adults can.
    3. An unborn baby exposed to alcohol regularly can develop 'foetal alcohol syndrome'.
    4. Binges, even if you don't do it regularly, must definitely be avoided.

At Assured Effects Hypnotherapy in South London and Poole Dorset help is offered to control drinking and overcome addictions.  Hypnobirthing services are also available.
